In My Mailbox #10: Borders Edition

"In My Mailbox" is a weekly event hosted by The Story Siren that spotlights the books we've received.

Bought

Let me first start off by saying that Borders liquidation sales are pretty terrible. The best sales are on the blu-ray and dvds but that only manages to bring their ridiculously overpriced prices down to the price everyone else sells them for. That said I did have two giftcards to get rid of and the romance section was 30% off and I got 10% more off because I have the sPeCiAl membership. I only paid $47 out of pocket for these 16 books :)
I've heard nothing about Ascension (Dark Breed #1) by Sable Grace. I stereotyped the cover and assumed it would something I'd enjoy though. I've been dying to get Hexed for a while now, mostly because I need to read the short story by Ilona Andrews. I haven't read anything by the other authors in the anthology but they're all on my list to eventually read. I've seen some rave review for Nightshade (Nightshade #1) by Michelle Rowen and Rowen in general so I'm really excited to read this one. I haven't seen anything for Viper Moon (Earth Witches #1) by Lee Roland around the blogosphere but I'm completely in love with the cover. Can't stop staring at the cover for Dark Awakening (Dark Dynasties #1) by Kendra Leigh Castle, it's becoming a problem. Seriously yummy.

The Werewolf Upstairs (Strange Neighbors #2) by Ashlyn Chase has the cutest cover ever, love the glitter swirls. I also love the artsy 'cozy mystery'-esque quality its got. Another seriously gorgeous cover, Sea Witch (Children of the Sea #1) by Virginia Kantra. I haven't read anything with selkies in it so I can't wait to read this one. I already own a copy of Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid #1) by Richelle Mead but it's the trade paperback and I prefer mass market ones, plus this one's cover is better. And so begins the endcap trickery. So the romance section borders (hehe) the fantasy/scfi section and there's a PNR/UF display there. In big lettering it says something along the lines of NEW FIRSTS, not new books in a series or new additions to a series. I took this to mean that the books were the first in a series and at this point despite my apprehension, I went ahead and picked up several books without googling them. Borders was always doing mean things like this to me so I'm so glad they got one last asshole move in. Story time: Their stunt before the endcap display was charging me $15 for a freakin' soda because they'd marked EVERTHING in the refrigerator with Italian syrup barcodes. Then preceded to try and convince me that because the soda had syrup in it that that was in fact the correct price label. Anyway, I bought Zombies Sold Separately (Night Tracker #4) by Cheyenne McCray even though my gut told me it wasn't the first in the series. Love the cover and title though. Sounds interesting but it's something my library doesn't have so I'll eventually have to pick up the first three books. I also bought Cold Sight (Extrasensory Agents #1) by Leslie Parrish. I'm madly in love with the cover for book two so I really hope I like this one.

I bought First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson #1) by Darynda Jones which I've been meaning to buy for ages. It got a ton of attention of goodreads and it sounds really good. Another book from the endcap of lies is Blood Spells (Final Prophecy #5) by Jessica Andersen. This one is a lot thicker than most romances. LOVE the cover though, hope to own the rest of the series soon. I haven't been hearing great things about American Vampire by Jennifer Armintrout but I bought it anyway because Armintrout is pretty much awesome. This is from the endcap too, Firewalker (Stormwalker #2) by Allyson James. I KNEW this one wasn't the first but I thought no way would they stick it there anyway. So disappointed in myself. Last one from the endcap is Frostbound (The Dark Forgotten #4) by Sharon Ashwood. I had no clue about this one. Didn't know if it even was in a series or what was going on. Looks good though.

The last book I bought I forgot to include with the others but it works since it stands out a little. Because Borders needs to get rid of everything, they aren't following release dates for the most part. There were a ton of YA titles out early but at only 10% it wasn't worth it to me. I did, however, buy Storm's Heart (Elder Races #2) by Thea Harrison. I loved the first book and I am about halfway through this one.

What did you get in your mailbox?

  1. AWESOME!! The closest Borders for me is across state lines (Arkansas into Tennessee). If gas wasn't so high I would make the road trip to stock up on books but it would be my luck I would drive over 200 miles and there would be nothing left.

Ouch, I'm not sure I'd drive that far no matter how great the sales were. I can't guarantee this, obviously, but my local Borders told me that they're receiving new shipments of books EVERY day because of all the warehouses that need to be emptied.

Haha, now I just need to find space for them on my bookshelf!

  5. So sad about Borders. I'm going to wait until September to drop by the stores - until I move to California so I don't have to pack up the books.

  8. That's what my haul looked like last week due to going to Border's. The sales weren't too fabulous, but I picked up mostly paperbacks which with 10% off were still cheap. When I went back last Friday when YA was up to 20% there was hardly anything left, so I'm glad I went when I did!

I'm going to miss them, though.

  14. OMG! You have the exact same tastes as me :) I have almost all of those books too!

Viper Moon... I really enjoyed it. It had not your stereotypical UF heroine; she had some major flaws... fairly new/original premise so it kept my interest

Thanks for the heads up on Borders setting out the new releases early...

  15. Sigh. Why am I not entirely surprised that Borders would have crappy prices for their big blowout? All of the ones close to me closed a long while ago, so maybe this is the best (for my wallet).

Still, nice haul you have there this week. :)

  16. It's a shame that Borders is closing but great that you got such good deals. A couple of years ago when ours closed I made out like a bandit and got some of the best deals.
